Chapter Thirteen

It turned out that Draco liked the pancakes. A lot. And especially with strawberries and syrup. While he polished off the stack, I walked to the mirror and applied a glamor on my features. I turned my café-au-lait complexion sallow, my eyes crimson, and my hair white. The vampire staring out at me looked dangerous, especially with the black clothes accentuating the deathly pallor.

“What are you doing?” Draco asked from the table.

I glanced at him through the reflection to find he’d already eaten half the pancakes. “Making a few tweaks to my appearance before we leave for the black zone.”

Draco shook his head. “You realize that half the people there can see through witch glamor?”

“Then I’ll be protected from fifty percent of people who might recognize your face.” I slipped the wand into my pocket and turned around. “How did you walk through the zone undetected?”

“I didn’t.” He emptied the bananas onto the remnants of his pancakes, and added on more of the syrup. “Besides, there are enchantments on the wards that stop enforcers from entering.”

“But that time I met King Valentine in the Temple of Light, he implied they could wait for you at the exits.”

Draco nodded. “Of which there are hundreds. The key to evading capture is to never let anyone know where or when you’ll be entering or exiting or where you will stay.”

My brows knitted together, and I rubbed my chin. “How does a prince get to think like a fugitive?”

“As the royal steward, I took care of threats to the kingdom, which involved tracking people through black zones and enemy territory.” Draco fell silent and turned his gaze back to the pancakes. From the tense set of his shoulders, it looked like he was thinking about his family.

I leaned against the wall and sighed. It was understandable that King Valentine wanted Draco punished for the assassination attempt, especially when Draco assumed his nephew was the walking dead. But what about the rest of the family in New Mesopotamia? The relationship he had with his children seemed to me more like that of a general and subordinates, and I could only guess that Draco’s father wasn’t particularly loving.

After he finished his brunch and the elixirs I’d bought from St. Vejovis Ambulance, he dabbed his lips with a napkin and rose from his seat. “Time to go.”

With a nod, I turned to the door.

“Let’s avoid the streets.” Draco strode from the dining table to the other end of the living room, where a six-and-a-half-foot-tall mirror stood by the wall. He placed a hand on its gold frame, making it glow with his magic.

The reflection rippled before turning opaque. I stepped back and bumped into a side table. “Is that safe?”

Draco turned to me with a frown. “Is this your first time taking an enchanted mirror?”

My shoulders rose up to my ears, but I didn’t move any closer to the magical object. “We’ve never needed them in the Temple of Light. Everywhere we usually go is within
